In a recent interview with News 24, Babita Phogat shared insights into the financial side of Dangal, the 2016 wrestling drama directed by Nitesh Tiwari, which starred Aamir Khan and was based on the Phogat family. Although the film became a massive hit, grossing around ₹2,000 crore worldwide, Babita revealed that her family only received ₹1 crore for the rights to their story—less than 1% of the total earnings.

Babita explained that this deal was made early on during the scripting phase, before Aamir Khan came on board as a producer. When asked about the compensation, she clarified it was far lower than the ₹20 crore some assumed, emphasizing it was about half of 10%. Despite this, Babita mentioned that her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, prioritized respect and recognition over financial gains, saying, “We want people’s respect and love. Leave everything else.”

She also revealed that her father proposed opening a wrestling academy in Haryana after the film’s success, but Aamir’s team never gave a definitive response, and the academy never materialized. Babita credited the public, rather than the movie, for making her a household name.

Dangal, co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Aamir Khan Productions, starred Aamir as Mahavir Singh Phogat, alongside Fatima Sana Shaikh, Zaira Wasim, Sanya Malhotra, and Suhani Bhatnagar as the Phogat sisters. It remains one of Hindi cinema’s biggest global successes.
