Rwanda is currently grappling with a Marburg virus outbreak that has resulted in at least 11 deaths among 36 confirmed cases since its declaration on September 27, 2024.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the outbreak as “very high” at the national level and “high” regionally, with ongoing concerns about the potential spread to neighboring countries

The virus, which shares similarities with Ebola, presents severe symptoms including high fever, muscle pain, and potentially fatal hemorrhagic fever, with a fatality rate reaching up to 88%(

Many of the infected are healthcare workers, prompting urgent calls for protective measures in medical facilities.

In response to the outbreak, Rwandan authorities have restricted funeral sizes to mitigate the spread and are monitoring around 410 individuals who had close contact with confirmed cases

Concurrently, travel health advisories have been issued, although the risk for travelers is considered low.

Recent concerns escalated when two passengers in Germany, who had traveled from Rwanda, exhibited flu-like symptoms. However, they later tested negative for the virus.

As Rwanda investigates the outbreak’s origin, health officials are beginning trials for potential vaccines and treatments.

The WHO is increasing its support for Rwandan authorities to combat the outbreak and prevent further spread.
