The Supreme Court of India has directed the establishment of an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations regarding the use of adulterated ghee and substandard materials in the preparation of laddus offered as prasadam at the Tirumala Tirupati Temple. The SIT will include two officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), appointed by the CBI director, along with two officers from the Andhra Pradesh State Police and a senior official from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

This decision follows a series of petitions calling for a court-monitored investigation into the matter, which has drawn significant public attention. The court emphasized that the move aims to address the concerns of the millions of devotees who hold the temple’s offerings dear. Justice BR Gavai noted the need to avoid using the court as a “political battleground,” referencing the ongoing tensions between opposing groups.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) welcomed the SIT formation, expressing support for the investigation to identify and penalize those responsible for the allegations, which have hurt the sentiments of many Hindus globally. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta remarked that any validity to the allegations—suggesting the use of inappropriate ingredients like beef tallow and fish oil—would be “unacceptable.” The CBI director will oversee the investigation to ensure its integrity and thoroughness.
