A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti ruled against Kejriwal’s appeal, citing consistency with an earlier decision dismissing AAP lawmaker Sanjay Singh’s similar plea. Kejriwal’s legal representative, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, argued that Kejriwal’s statements were different from Singh’s, but the court refused to entertain the appeal.
The defamation complaint, filed in April 2023, alleges that Kejriwal and Singh made defamatory remarks concerning PM Modi’s academic degrees, tarnishing Gujarat University’s image. This led to the trial court issuing summons to the two politicians.
In 2023, the Gujarat High Court had also ruled that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was not obligated to provide Modi’s degree certificates under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, further escalating the controversy.
The Supreme Court’s rejection means Kejriwal will now face trial over the defamation case.
