Early on October 3, conflicting reports emerged about an Israeli airstrike targeting a weapons warehouse at the Russian Khmeimim base near Latakia, Syria. Abdullah Almousa highlighted that Syrian TV sources claimed the strike coincided with the arrival of an Iranian cargo plane from Qeshm Fars Airlines, which raised suspicions of potential arms shipments.

The attack, reportedly involving around thirty missiles launched from naval warships at 3:55 a.m., selectively avoided critical infrastructure at the airfield. Following the airstrike, a Russian air patrol was observed over Latakia, and firefighting efforts were underway to control blazes in the area, linked to the weapons depot.

While some Syrian opposition outlets confirmed the targeting of the depot at Khmeimim, Russian media reported that Israeli forces struck locations in western coastal cities, with Syrian air defenses engaging incoming projectiles for over 40 minutes.

Amid this incident, U.S. and Israeli officials are reportedly in discussions about potential military responses to Iranian aggression, which could involve targeting Iranian militias in Syria and Yemen. President Biden aims to coordinate responses with Israeli leaders but has expressed reservations about strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Analysts suggest that Israel may pursue its agenda independent of U.S. counsel, particularly concerning recent escalations with Hamas in Gaza.
