Sinwar, who had led Hamas since 2017, was the key architect behind the 2023 invasion and massacre in southern Israel, in which over 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed, and 251 hostages were taken, igniting the war in Gaza. His death occurred during an IDF operation when troops from the Officers Training course engaged with a group of Hamas gunmen. Sinwar was identified among the dead after Israeli soldiers entered the building and suspected one of the bodies was him.

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed that no Israeli hostages were found in the area, despite reports that Sinwar had been hiding among hostages and using them as human shields. The area is still being searched due to concerns of booby traps. With Sinwar’s confirmed death, there are uncertainties about who will lead Hamas moving forward and how his demise will impact negotiations for the release of the remaining 101 Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

Sinwar’s leadership began after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh last July, and his role in orchestrating the attacks that sparked the war made him a central figure in the conflict. His death represents a significant development in the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hamas.
