IIT Kanpur has developed a unique material that could significantly enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army. This special fabric, which makes soldiers and fighter jets invisible, can also deceive enemy radars, infrared cameras, thermal imagers, and satellites. If adopted by the Indian Army, this technology would allow soldiers and fighter jets to be virtually invisible, providing them a tactical advantage on the battlefield.
The material, developed by three IIT Kanpur scientists—Professor Kumar Vaibhav Srivastava, Professor S. Ananth Ramakrishnan, and Professor J. Rajkumar—has been designed to provide stealth capabilities. Its primary feature is its ability to render military personnel, vehicles, and fighter jets undetectable by enemy detection systems. This fabric could be used for soldiers’ uniforms, military vehicle covers, and fighter jets.

The technology is entirely indigenous, making it six to seven times cheaper than foreign alternatives. The team filed a patent for this material in 2018, which has now been approved. For the past six years, the Indian Army has been conducting trials of this technology, which were recently showcased at the Defense Startup Exhibition held at IIT Kanpur. The demonstration was well-received, and experts believe that once approval is granted, the fabric could be deployed within a year.
Former Air Vice Marshal and MD of Meta Elements Pvt. Ltd., Praveen Bhatt, emphasized that this material will not only thwart enemy technologies but also elevate the strategic and defensive capabilities of the Indian Army to new heights.
