Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s highly anticipated visit to Nigeria, India has sent significant humanitarian assistance to the country, which is struggling under the impact of devastating floods. India’s Ministry of External Affairs shared the details of the aid, revealing that 15 tons of relief materials have been dispatched as part of a larger 75 tons of humanitarian assistance.
The aid includes essential items such as food, sleeping mats, blankets, and water purification supplies. These efforts aim to provide critical support for the rehabilitation of communities affected by the floods, which have caused significant damage to lives and livelihoods.

A Dire Situation in Nigeria
Nigeria is currently facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent years, with severe floods worsening the country’s already challenging situation. The United Nations reports that Nigeria is grappling with soaring inflation, climate shocks, and ongoing conflicts. As a result, the number of food-insecure people is expected to reach a staggering 33 million by 2025. The World Food Programme has called for an “immediate and massive” collective response to address the dire needs of the country, emphasizing the importance of both prevention and life-saving assistance.

A Historic Visit
This humanitarian gesture comes just ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Nigeria, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 17 years. During the visit, Modi is expected to engage in high-level discussions with Nigerian leadership to review the strategic partnership between the two nations. The focus will be on enhancing collaboration in areas such as energy, defense, and economic development.
