What is the MUDA Case?
The MUDA case revolves around allegations of corruption and malpractice within the Mysuru Urban Development Authority, which oversees urban planning and development in the Mysuru region. The investigation has gained attention due to claims that Siddaramaiah and his associates were involved in unethical practices related to land allotments and the misuse of authority.
Specifically, the focus is on irregularities in the allotment of compensatory sites, designated areas provided to individuals affected by development projects. Allegations include favoritism in granting these sites and potential manipulation of documents to facilitate illegal allocations. The case raises significant questions about transparency and accountability within the MUDA and the influence of political power in urban development.
Ongoing Investigation
The Lokayukta has already interrogated the third accused, Mallikarjuna Swamy, who is Siddaramaiah’s brother-in-law, along with landowner J. Devaraju. Following procedural checks, CM Siddaramaiah is expected to be questioned after the Diwali festival. The Special Court for MLAs and MPs has mandated the Lokayukta to submit a report on the case by December 25.
Simultaneously, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched its investigation into the matter, recently conducting raids at the MUDA office in Mysuru and the residence of Devaraju in Bengaluru’s Kengeri locality. Sources indicate that the ED might extend its inquiry to the residences of both CM Siddaramaiah and his wife.
Petition for CBI Probe
Adding to the complexities, petitioner Snehamayi Krishna has filed a petition with the High Court, urging that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the MUDA case. The petitioner expressed concerns over the impartiality of the Lokayukta officers, suggesting they may hesitate to pursue actions against the Chief Minister.
Testimony from Parvathi Siddaramaiah
The Lokayukta recently questioned Parvathi for three hours. On Friday, she appeared before the Mysuru Lokayukta SP T. J. Udesha, managing to avoid media attention. During the investigation, Parvathi explained her use of whitener on a letter submitted to the MUDA regarding the allotment of compensatory sites, citing a mistake in the document. However, she was unable to recall the exact nature of the error.
This ongoing investigation poses a potential setback for the ruling Congress party, which is currently gearing up for crucial by-elections in three assembly constituencies in Karnataka. The political implications of this probe could influence the party’s standing in the upcoming elections, as the focus shifts to accountability and governance in the state.
