On Monday evening, a potentially serious accident was averted involving Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s convoy in Thiruvananthapuram. Several vehicles in the convoy, including one carrying the Chief Minister himself, collided after a woman on a scooter unexpectedly entered their path.
Incident Details
The incident took place around 6:30 pm at Vamanapuram Park Junction. The convoy was moving quickly when the woman, riding a scooter, indicated a right turn and maneuvered in front of the convoy. The driver of the lead escort vehicle applied the brakes suddenly to avoid hitting her, resulting in a chain collision as the vehicles behind could not stop in time. Reports reveal that five escort vehicles, including an ambulance, were damaged.
Heavy Traffic Helped Avoid Major Casualties
The convoy, returning to the state capital from Kottayam, was moving at a slower pace due to traffic, which played a role in preventing more serious injuries. Security personnel immediately rushed to check on the Chief Minister and ensured his safety before assessing the damage to the vehicles. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the CM’s security detail or the convoy members.
Investigation Underway
The police have initiated an investigation to identify the woman on the scooter, considering it a case of possible traffic violation. A case has been registered, focusing on how the incident unfolded and the potential traffic violations involved.
This incident brings to mind a similar occurrence in 2021 in Kannur, where three escort vehicles in the Chief Minister’s convoy collided in a comparable situation.
